Irn Bru

1874 Andrea Barr, daughter of Robert Barr, collecting girder sparks. It is common knowledge that Irn Bru is made from girders, but the back story as to how isn't as well known.


Andrea Barr worked the steel at a local factory, during this time she collected the sparks from the girders and one day accidentally knocked her medicine bottle into the bucket. In her attempts to filter the medicine out of the bucket, and leaving the leftovers to sit on her workbench when she went for lunch. It is at this time a parched colleague saw the liquid and in a bid to quench his thirst drank it. Upon her return her colleague asked what magical substance he had consumed, as it tasted incredible. I



In the following days he felt no ailments or hangovers and Andrea and her brother had an idea. In 1875 then saw the birth of "Irn Bru", however at the time it was known as Strachan's Brew. The soft drink was then launched in 1901 by Andrew Barr, going on to become the number one selling drink in Scotland today.
